Wow.
I am constantly amazed by the the human brain. You have to listen to this story from Radiolab about an art student whose mind was almost lost forever, but was found thanks to her very persistent boyfriend. Inspirational for all the right reasons.
(There's an Etsy shop to support Emily and her ongoing medical costs; the gorgeous painting above is available there.)

"Wherever you are is my home..."
Because I am both cheap and resourceful (yay me!), I've been downloading as many free classic books as I can onto my fancy new Kindle. Last week I read Little Women, and this week I finished the Wizard of Oz (movie is way better) and Jane Eyre. I forgot how incredibly mesmerizing that whole book is; I think it may be the most romantic thing I've ever read, in the sense that it actually makes my stomach all fluttery to think about it.

NUPTIALS!
I just got word that two of my most beloved friends will be getting married in 2010! I can't wait to go to Austin and Portland to witness the nuptials (the grossest word ever, ever, besides panties!). I am so, so happy that they're happy, and as always, so glad for these long and steady friendships.
I hope they don't mind that I've taken the liberty of picking out their wedding cake toppers for them. I am obsessed with these damn things and their existence is pretty much the most exciting thing about getting married for me.Congrats!

I love Brandon Bird's art. It appeals to me in every way. Someday when I am rich I will buy one of his big pieces, but for now, a look at his website is satisfying enough. Happy Valentine's to everyone!

People Make Weird Choices
I've been really good lately at taking chances on new movies instead of just watching Season 3 of The Office for the 500th time. I chose the 2007 documentary Crazy Love because it was on Netflix's list of Oakland favorites, and I thought I should see why the rest of the city liked it so much.
Crazy Love is the story of Burt Pugach, who hires thugs to throw lye into his ex-girlfriend's Linda's eyes after she jilts him. She goes blind, he goes to jail, and 17 years later, they get married. It's a really sad, fucked-up story told in sort of an offhand, jovial way, which I found interesting. The tone really differs from the subject matter; kind of like, "Hey, look at these two goofballs," as opposed to something much darker.
I do love character studies, though, and while it's clear that Pugach is a sociopath, Linda was a little harder to figure out. This was a great sewing movie because like most documentaries, it didn't have much action, just lots of talking. Recommended if you want to feel weird for the rest of the day. Do not watch on Valentine's Day.
